Where are you then?

When the darkness falls,
When the silence prevails,
When the air freezes,
when the stir stops,
When the cricket chirps,
when the life sleeps,
when the bed warms,
when the limbs break,
When the nerves ache,
When the sense fails,
When the eyelids droop,
When the eyeballs squeeze,
when the eyes close,
WHERE ARE YOU THEN?

A lost past...

I had a niece, a very cute little girl. We were in a big Entertainment room with lots of big leather chairs and lots of kids. I sat with her on one of the big sofa-cum-leather chairs right in the front as we watched an animation movie playing on the big TV screen. She was enjoying immensely. I had to leave to go to work. So I went out and asked my father/ brother-in-law (?) to look after her, but they were going as well to work. So I went back in and asked her to leave with me so that I could drop her home and then proceed to office. She refused, she was so engrossed in the movie. I didnt feel like disturbing her so I asked the Caretaker over there if I could leave her there and she could watch over her for few hours till I could get back. She agreed.

So I left, taking a last look at her. But I felt guilty soon for leaving her behind and I rushed back. Half an hour had passed since I left her there. But when I got back she wasnt there. I asked the caretaker, but she had no idea. I shouted at her and looked frantically around for my niece. But I could not locate her. After sometime my brother came back with her. He was pissed off at me, I could feel. But he didn't say a word to me. Just set her back on the same chair she was in. She was smiling and again enjoying whatever was on TV at that time. But she looked a little worse for wear. She had a bump on her forehead, which looked painful to me. But her smiles were sweet and including me in them. And her hair... they were bleached blonde? Why? She had dark brown hair before I left her there. I felt so, so guilty. And I woke up feeling sad.

P.S. For the records, I just have one nephew, no nieces! And my brother is long gone...
